Eat Healthy While Traveling

Eat Healthy While Traveling

One of the questions I receive most often is: “How do you eat healthy while traveling so much?”

I feel you, many times traveling equals overeating, dining out all the time, not working out and gaining weight. Been there, done that.

But the truth is: it doesn’t have to be this way! Traveling is one of coolest things in the world and we deserve to enjoy it while staying healthy and excited about being on the road.

Here’s my first suggestion for all of you who are about to leave for some awesome destination: if you are going for more than 3 or 4 days, instead of staying in a hotel, rent an apartment!!

Not only will you save money, you will have an overall more pleasurable, homey experience, and you will be able to take control over what you put on your plate!

Having your own kitchen is the key to always eating healthy and to make sure the food you eat is fresh and prepared with healthy, allergy free ingredients.

Here are my two Tips to Always Eat Healthy While Traveling:

Make a good research!

Home Away, VRBO, AirB&B… the services that allow you get in touch with apartment owners all over the world are many.

Once you find a place you like, look it up on Google Maps and check if there’s a gym nearby. Working out regularly is the key to stay on track with your health goals.

Also, make sure the kitchen is nice and has everything you need. And if the pictures on the website aren’t clear enough, don’t be shy and ask the owner: “Can you send more photos? Do you have a blender? Is there an oven?”

Having a nice kitchen, where you can actually enjoy cooking, will make you feel like you want to spend more time in there and create deliciously healthy meals.

Take traveling as an opportunity to experience all the local foods and produce.

Find out when the farmers market is and stock up with lots of fresh fruits and veggies. Learn about the local delicacies and discover new foods that you have never tried before.

I love cooking with new ingredients! That’s how I discovered lotus roots, canistelle, jackfruit, cassava flour, tiger nuts, etc.
Every new place you visit has its own spices, baking products, and amazing fruits and it will keep cooking at home incredibly exciting!

How do you manage to stay healthy while traveling, I mean not get a stomach bug or food poisoning, as you travel to the countries where hygiene is not always good?
And another question, have you ever had a stomach problem while on holiday and how did you solve it?
I am so afraid of unknown bacteria in foreign countries! Please give me some advice.

Very interesting question L! I have lived in South East Asia for three years and unfortunately got sick a few times (hospital status), so I learned the hard way.
Basically, I never eat outside of the hotel (and I always stay in hotels that belong to big chains so I am sure they have to adhere to worldwide hygiene measures).
The only things I eat outside of the hotels are coconut water (only if the straw is sealed) and bananas. Also I always take oregano oil caps with me and try to drink ginger juice whenever I can as they have lots of antibacterial properties.

I will write a blog post about the subject soon as there is so much to say. Thanks so much for bringing this up!!
